Learning Why Oceans Are Important

Lower School News

First Grade has kicked off a major ocean study unit! The driving question pertaining to everything they study is: Why are oceans important and what affect do humans have on them?

Upper School science teacher Lisa Peck taught first graders about single, simple life-form creatures. They learned about the repetitive pattern of the number five in sea stars and sea urchins, which was brought to life when they dissected sea urchins together.

Charger parent Dr. Warnick brought in tubs of many different marine animals from Tampa Bay. The children were able to touch, hold and observe a puffer fish, sheepshead, sand dollars, blue crabs and many other interesting creatures. With Tampa Bay being in the sunlit zone and having a tropical climate, it has many species living in the waters, especially near and around mangroves. He began and ended by emphasizing the need for taking care of our oceans and waterways, which reinforced the importance of the first grade oceanography study.
