Ocean Study Visitors in First Grade

Lower School News

As part of their ocean studies unit, first graders hosted many recent visitors.

Upper School science teacher Mrs. Peck visited first grade to teach about the simplest of ocean life, the sponge, and then taught about different sea animals including sea urchins. She dissected an urchin for students to view and taught them many different facts along the way.

Shorecrest parent Jenn Lewis presented an educational slideshow about penguins. First graders acted like scientists and removed oil from feathers, similar to what is done when there is an oil spill.

Experiential and Lower School Curriculum Dean Mrs. Craft taught a lesson about liquid and volume. She related the information to sharks, that have livers full of oil to help them float. Students predicted how much oil should be in a water bottle to make it float in water.

Mrs. Oman's class created a beautiful mural to show what they learned. You can see painted sharks, sea life and a coral reef inside their classroom.

On Friday, May 4, first graders will perform "Commotion in the Ocean" at 8:30am in the Janet Root Theatre. Come see all they have learned!
