Naval Commander visits Third Grade

Lower School News

Last week third graders had the honor of hearing about the experience of a retired U.S. Naval Commander who served aboard submarines. CDR. Richard Speights held the students' attention as he shared the Navy's purpose - to protect and save as many lives as possible every day, as well as submarine conditions, amenities, and strategies. He shared the mechanics of submarines and what it's like to steer them, how fast they can travel, and ways that they stay safe or remained undetected during battle. Students were surprised to learn the navy personnel ate steak and lobster and had ice cream machines on submarines!

The students asked questions the entire time about air, water, power, and amenities. It was such an incredible experience. To thank him for his time, each child wrote a thank you letter expressing what they enjoyed - and some asked more questions. The class hopes to Skype with him after he receives their notes in the mail.

Mr. Speights is also Mrs. Rebman's uncle, and this wasn't his first time on campus. "When I was a student here, he shared with my class, and now that I'm teaching here, he shared with my class!" Rebman excitedly reported.
