35th Annual Grandparents & Special Friends Day

Lower School News

Grandparents & Special Friends Day is a beloved Shorecrest tradition, 35-years strong and counting. This year's event, held on Friday, January 25, 2019, brought together nearly 600 guests including grandparents, great-grandparents and special friends for food, music, drama, classroom tours and more.

The day began with a continental breakfast in the Athletic Center to fuel the group for their busy morning. Next, guests were ushered into the Janet Root Theatre for performances from all ages. The concert band played "The Star Spangled Banner," and Treblecrest, the Shorecrest a cappella group, sang the "Shorecrest Alma Mater" to start the show. Grandparents and special friends reveled in musical and theatrical performances from groups spanning the PK3-12 Shorecrest program.

Thank you to Grandparent Council Chair Donna Gaffney and Annual Giving Grandparent Chairs Dianna and Marshall Craig their leadership and remarks at the event. These engaged grandparents invited others to get involved and experience all that the Shorecrest community has to offer.

Following the performing arts program, grandparents and special friends visited their special students in their respective classrooms. The students proudly shared their school with their loved ones.

The Grandparent Council encourages grandparents to get involved at Shorecrest and get to know each other. There are a variety of volunteer opportunities for grandparents at Shorecrest from volunteering in the library or a garden, helping with art or athletic events and more. The Council also organizes several social and learning activities during the school year. Attendees enjoy getting to know fellow grandparents and learning more about Shorecrest.

The next event is a meeting of the Grandparent Book Club on Tuesday, April 16, at 10am in the Middle School Conference Room. The group will be discussing "The Girl with Seven Names: A North Korean Defector's Story." Contact Laina Bennett in the Shorecrest Advancement Office at [email protected] or 727-346-1807 to RSVP or to learn more.
