Fourth Graders are working on nonfiction reading skills using historical content. The unit is a collaboration across classrooms, as students rotate through lessons with each fourth grade teacher. They are studying Enslavement and the Underground Railroad with Mrs. Cameron, The Great Depression with Mrs. Husenitza, World War II with Mrs. Palazzolo and The Civil Rights Movement with Mrs. Weinkle. Their Civil Rights studies include the landmark court cases of Brown vs. Board of Education and The Little Rock Nine.
Students have gathered information from different sources including videos, articles, and guest experts to expand their knowledge of the topics. Mrs. Weinkle invited a special guest, Shorecrest Kindergarten teacher Mrs. Joanne Minke, to share some of her experiences teaching during the time when some schools were still segregated. This is Mrs. Minke’s 41st year teaching at Shorecrest.
