Bay Grasses in Classes
Bay Grasses in Classes is a community restoration program in which Shorecrest students grow smoothcord grass on the Shorecrest campus (behind the football field) and eventually transplant it back into the Bay. About once every 2 weeks the eighth graders check water quality, weed, check for diseases, and perform basic maintenance on the plot. They have clocked 20 hours this year working on the grasses.
Melinda Spall, a representative from Tampa Bay Watch, contacted us about our bay grasses (BGIC). Mrs. Spall stated that they are growing very well and that she is going to come and take a few trays of grass to put on display at the Restore America's Estuaries Conference, a national conference at the Tampa Convention Center. Shorecrest will be mentioned within the display regarding this restoration project.
Melinda sent a thank-you note saying, "Thanks again for letting TBW borrow your Salt Marsh trays for our display! I've attached a picture of how they looked in our display, we had two of these mini salt marsh nurseries. Thanks so much for helping us make RAE Conference 2012 a success!"
