A Day in the Life

Throughout the past month, Shorecrest’s Office of Enrollment Management has hosted a number of Admissions Open Houses and invited prospective families to learn more about the School. Participants also included current Chargers families who want to hear about the experience for their children as they grow and mature into the next phase of their educational journey. Some of these Open Houses were virtual functions, which allowed visitors to attend from across the country and from around the world.
Each Admissions Open House starts with a brief “Day in the Life” video, which takes the viewer from the opening school bell through after-school activities. A student or faculty narrator explains how the school day unfolds in their school division, from morning arrival through classroom routines, with vivid images and explanations about classes and daily life.
A highlight of the Open House is the student panel, where Upper School Student Ambassadors, many of whom have spent many years as students at Shorecrest, answer questions on all sorts of topics. These are unscripted responses, sometimes brutally honest, about the joys and challenges of student life at Shorecrest. Parent panels are next, where concerns and questions from prospective and current families are answered with the insight and parental perspective of what it is like to be a part of the Shorecrest community. Rounding out the evening are remarks from administrators and faculty, who often address curricular questions and larger strategic issues.
In addition to Open Houses, Shorecrest has other opportunities for current families to gain a glimpse into life at the next level. The goal is to provide some context of what the future holds for Shorecrest students. A number of eighth graders have already taken advantage of the chance to shadow a ninth grader and explore life in the Upper School. There are “Lunch & Learns” scheduled for eighth graders and their families to talk with Upper School administrators and students. The Middle School will hold a special event for fourth graders to introduce these students to life in fifth grade and talk with current Middle Schoolers. “Discover Kindergarten” is a January event designed to welcome JK families into Kindergarten and learn more about the Lower School program, as they continue on from the Experiential School.
As a PK3 through 12th grade school, we understand that families choose to recommit to Shorecrest on an annual basis. Looking ahead to our re-enrollment period of February 1-15, 2023, it is important that families are fully informed about what to expect for their children as they transition into new school divisions. We are on a tight re-enrollment deadline this year, as in many grades we will not know if we have openings for incoming new students until re-enrollment is complete. We are pleased with this high demand for Shorecrest from prospective families; however our first commitment is to current students.
We have a great school. At Shorecrest, our focus is on the whole child, creating lifelong learners in an inclusive, diverse community, where academic rigor and outstanding co-curricular opportunities prepare students to be global citizens who are ready for college and beyond. We are proud of our teachers, staff and coaches, who challenge and support students throughout their childhood and adolescent development. If you have any questions or would like to learn more about your child’s next step at Shorecrest, I invite you to reach out to our Enrollment Management team to experience a Day in the Life!
All the best,
Nancy
