First Graders Begin Human Body Study with Five Senses

Lower School News

Shorecrest first graders began an annual, months-long study of the human body with a hands-on lesson in which they used all five senses to explore apples. The activities sparked curiosity and also pointed to the “boss of the body," the brain, as the center that brings all of our senses together. Students became “Apple Detectives” and sampled five varieties of apples. They compared flavors - sweet and sour - and described the textures, sounds and smells they experienced. While exploring, the detectives took detailed notes to remember what they learned and experienced.

The students also enjoyed a quiet room for movement and yoga, where they acted out the motions of gathering apples and making applesauce. In another classroom they crafted apple-themed paper hats and heard a song about Johnny Appleseed. Soon they will continue their apple journey by making applesauce from scratch together.

This exciting start to the study of the human body inspired students to track their observations, ask questions, and learn some of the many ways we experience the world.
