On September 20th, the MS Football Chargers were down two starters - Sasa B LT and Talon H FB/LB. Who stepped up? Everyone together! The Chargers forged a great comeback down 6-0 at halftime and not receiving the kickoff, and found a way to fight back and win 14-6 to a shocked Keswick team!
The offense started out slow this week on the opening kickoff but the Defense lead by Enzo P, Jake W, Cyrus A, and Drew B held them down and we received the ball at the 50 yard line. Great blocking by Cody B, Jake K, Pat D and Chase W lead the running attack of Trey M and Drew B. The team drove down to the 5 yard line. A quick pass was deflected at the line lead to a Charger turnover with 3 minutes to go. The Keswick offense rolled down the field by running the ball and scored a TD with a minute on the clock. The Shorecrest Defense lead by Pat D, Drew B, and James F stopped the 2 point conversion. Things looked tough for the Chargers heading out of halftime but the Charger coaches made both offensive and defensive adjustments and the players responded with the desire of a winner. The Shorecrest Defense held them on their first drive with great efforts in the secondary by James, Jake, and Trey sending the message that Keswick would have to run to beat the Chargers.
The second half offense found its new Thunder and Lighting running combo of Trey and Drew. They moved the ball down the field, then Trey busted a 40-yard run to the Keswick 2 yard line. From there Drew carried the ball into the end zone. Shorecrest missed the 2 point conversion. We had a tied game and the momentum had swung back to Shorecrest. The following drive Keswick continued to run the ball, but Drew, Cyrus, Enzo, Pat, and Hadeon were up to the challenge. They forced a punt to start the fourth quarter.
Rogan K had a shaky first half came alive in the second half going 5-6 on this critical drive. Again the combo of Trey and Drew ran the ball. On a critical 3rd and thirteen Rogan K hit Drew B on an 11-yard pass. On 4th and 2 from the 20-yard line the offensive line of Cody, Jake, Chase and Enzo made a running lane for Drew B to pick up 5 yards. On third and 12 from the 15 yard line. Rogan K threw a fade pattern to the corner and missed his open target James F. On the critical 4 and 12 Rogan K told his coach, "I got this, let me do it again. I will not miss James F this time."
Rogan K completed a perfect timing pattern to James F and the Chargers were up 12-6. Drew B again had a solid run with great blocking from the line for the 2 points. There was still 2:30 to go and Keswick had all of their time outs. The challenge they had was they could not throw, so they tried to run but Enzo, James F, Alex, Derek, Chase, Hayden and Cody were not going to let that happen. The Chargers were able to hold them, and Rogan K was able to do the best play a QB can do - the Victory knee with his teammates.
This was an extremely hard-ought game that was not just about offense and defense. It was about how the players who have been working together since August bonded, trusted and worked together towards one common goal. That is why Football makes such an impact on player development.
