Varsity Volleyball Hosts A Teachers Appreciation Match

Athletics Upper School News

Earlier this month the Varsity Volleyball team hosted a special match dedicated to celebrating Shorecrest teachers for the support they show student-athletes in the classroom and beyond.

The idea sparked during a walk through the Janet Root Theatre. Varsity Head Coach Courtney Draper was admiring one of her senior athletes’ artwork when she was struck by the students’ wide-ranging talents. “As a teacher at Shorecrest, I absolutely love going to all of the theater performances,” Draper said. “So I thought, why not invite our teachers to come watch them compete in volleyball?”

Draper asked her players to each choose a teacher or staff member who had made a meaningful impact on their life. Together the team crafted personalized invitations to the match — each accompanied by a handwritten note of appreciation and a team T-shirt. Of the 23 staff members invited, 21 attended.

On Thursday, October 9, the Crisp Gym was filled with posters reading “Thank You” and “We Love You.” Teachers wore their new shirts proudly and were recognized before the start of the match.

“It was such a fun night, and I’m so happy that so many teachers came out to support our team,” said Draper. “It was a wonderful way to show them how much they mean to us.”
