

Shorecrest & Academy Prep Partner, Benefit from Tech Recycling Drive

Thursday, April 19, members of the STEAM Club for Girls joined Dr. Anna Baralt, Shorecrest Director of Educational Technology, to deliver a mobile tech lab of 15 laptops to Academy Prep Center of St. Petersburg. The donation was made possible through a partnership with eSmart Recycling and its One Million Laptops Campaign.
Academy Prep Center of St. Petersburg is a rigorous private middle school for students qualifying for need-based scholarships. A number of Academy Prep graduates go on to attend and excel in the Upper School at Shorecrest.
Shorecrest, currently ranked as the #1 Best High School for STEM in Pinellas County according to Niche, launched the Girls STEAM Club (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) in 2016. Through the club, high school girls at Shorecrest mentor Middle School girls from both Shorecrest and Academy Prep and lead them through monthly meetings and STEAM-based learning opportunities. Past activities include exploring circuits, a variety of science experiments, designing video games, and engineering design challenges.
eSmart Recycling, located in Tampa, recycles computers and electronics to set up tech incubators for kids without access to technology all over the world. The company is the 2016 Sustainable Business Award Winner in the small business category. They provide certificates for secure data destruction of hard drives. eSmart is the founder of the One Million Laptops Campaign, an international campaign to bring technology to underserved communities. Through the technology recycling drive at Shorecrest, eSmart was able to donate 15 fully refurbished laptops to the students at Academy Prep. The recycling drive is ongoing at Shorecrest, with donation bins in each school office and in the library. A full list of accepted items is available here.
eSmart and Shorecrest have the ambitious goal of collecting enough recyclables to provide laptops for each of the 100+ students at Academy Prep.
