Chargers Football beat Keswick Christian: 21-9

Athletics

The Chargers relied on a power running game & a stingy defense Friday night to defeat Keswick Christian 21-9 in the 2017 Kickoff Classic. Fullbacks RJ A. & Drew Z, and tailbacks Orrin F, Jake F & Apollo K all contributed to the Chargers "ground & pound" offense.

"It was sloppy for sure, but we learned a lot from this game. Keswick was a very tough & physical team who loaded up their defensive front against our running game. We had to dig deep to put points on the board. Keswick was a much improved team & gave us fits which was good for our boys," said Charger coach Steve Dudley.

On defense, the Chargers gave up 1 big play - a 45 yard TD pass that came right before halftime, but largely contained the Keswick offense the rest of the game. Several Charger defenders shined on defense including Hunter R, RJ, Ethan F, Drew Z, Jake F & Ashton R. Both teams combined for five turnovers in the first half. Thanks to a third-quarter safety, Keswick Christian took an early 9-7 lead, b ut the power-run offense of Shorecrest was too much as the Chargers rallied for a 21-9 victory.

Stars of the game: Shorecrest linebacker Hunter R was a playmaker on defense. He had a fumble recovery in the first half, and his interception late in the game stalled any thoughts of a Keswick comeback. Chargers fullback RJ A. shined on both sides of the ball making mutiple big plays on defense, while also rushing 12 times for 86 yards on offense.

QB's: Paul G completed 3-of-9.

The Chargers battle Seffner Christian this Friday for a non-conference matchup @ 7:30pm. Game will be played at Kings High School in Tampa.
