Shorecrest Upper School student and golfer Sophie Dyer '26 and her teammate, Bella Dovhey, received bronze medals at the semifinals of the 10th U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball golf tournament. It was hosted earlier this month at the Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club in Nichols Hills, OK.

It was a special experience, said Dyer. “It’s such a highly regarded event and it was an incredible accomplishment to even qualify. USGA events are the best of the best and mean so much to compete in. You won’t find better competition anywhere else.”

Going into the quarterfinals Dyer knew it would be a tough battle against the winners of the stroke play portion of the tournament. Still the duo beat a set of 21-year-old twins from Oceanside, California, in 21 holes, exempting them into the championship for the next two years. The big victory came after a 35 foot birdie putt by Dyer.

“It was such a special moment because I got to celebrate with my best friend and my parents caddying for us. It was a big accomplishment taking down the number 1 seed and such incredible players,” said Dyer, who is verbally committed to compete at the University of Florida.

Dyer has traveled to Oklahoma twice in the past year for golf tournaments. “The courses are unbelievable,” she said. Last summer, she played in the U.S. Amateur at Southern Hills, which is one of the most notorious golf courses in history. The course for her most recent competition was also gorgeous, she said. “It was also a big test to my golf game given the difficulty.”

From here Dyer is off to the Sea Island Women’s Amateur where she will be competing against some of the best College and Junior players. “I can’t wait to get out there and compete.”
