Summer 2014 Update

Head of School Letter

Dear Shorecrest Parents and Students:

I wish you all a wonderful Independence Day weekend, and hope you are all doing well as you engage with your work, family time and recreational activities this summer.

July 4th is a symbolic mid-way point in the summer for many of us. Plans for the coming school year are well underway. A full mailing will come to all of you around July 16. In the meantime, I want to suggest two books to parents interested in the academic and intellectual growth of their children.

1) Mindset: The New Psychology of Success by Dr. Carol Dweck. This book, written in 2006, continues to be one of the most outstanding and thoughtful resources for teachers, students and parents who wish to understand the motivation behind lifelong learning and growth. The book is excellent for parents with children of any age.

2) Members of the Board of Trustees are reading Amanda Ripley’s The Smartest Kids in the World and How They Got that Way. Ripley follows U.S. exchange students to other nations who have very high scores on the international achievement test PISA. Regardless of one’s view on the value of testing, Ripley does identify some common elements that lead students and schools to greater academic success.

I look forward to seeing all of you in August.

Best wishes and Cheers!
Mike Murphy
Headmaster
