Meet the Middle School SLACers - Student Leadership Action Committee

Middle School News

Under the guidance of a four-teacher committee, the Middle School Leadership Council has been reinvented as the Student Leadership Action Committee - or SLAC. The SLACers comprise a group of fifth through eighth grade student leaders who completed a formal application process. Interested students submitted personal essays explaining the importance of leadership and gathered signatures for personal references.

The Student Leadership Action Committee includes at least one representative from each advisory and meets bimonthly during study hall. Together, the student leaders are charged with promoting service projects, creating student-led activities and events, and working to maintain a positive culture and climate  in the Middle School at Shorecrest.

The group’s first community-building initiative has been a smashing success, evident by the overflowing Food Drive bins in the Middle School. The SLACers created teams connecting advisories within and across grade-levels - each team with a corresponding color. Throughout October, the teams have engaged in friendly competition in support of Shorecrest’s Fall Food Drive. The students organized the promotional materials, made presentations to their classmates and have built unstoppable momentum.

Coming next week, the SLACers have planned and will lead a number of team-building activities for the full Middle School community during the half day on October 30.

According to the SLACers, “We're bringin' up the slack!”
