Following the conclusion of the fourth grade sustainability projects, two programs are now in effect here at Shorecrest. In an effort to keep the Lower School 'plastic bag free', there is a bin located outside of the nurse's clinic with reusable bags. Anyone on campus who is in need of a bag is welcome to take one to borrow and then return it when he/she is done using it. This group of environmentally conscious fourth graders welcomes donations of reusable bags to keep up their supply. You can also drop off plastic bags there and Ethan, Kaja, Cameron and Shae will make sure they get recycled properly.
A second group is collecting old electronic devices in a bin outside of fourth grade. This is in the effort to reduce mining for the natural resource of coltan, which is used in creating electronic devices and is found in the Congo. Mining for this resource greatly impacts a great ape habitat. Jake and Evan will make sure that your donations go to eco-cell, a Jane Goodall Institute program that works with recycling these items so that more mining does not occur.
Thank you to Shorecrest senior Caroline G., a representative of Jane's Goodall's Roots & Shoots National Youth Leadership Council for the 2015 year term, for her instrumental role in helping to make this program known to the fourth grade.
