Digital Citizenship Week in Lower School

As we use more technology and devices at school and home, students need to learn about navigating their online interactions more than ever. Shorecrest Lower School celebrated Digital Citizenship Week on February 22-26, and used the opportunity to remind our students how to be good digital citizens.
During Digital Citizenship Week, students learned how to be safe online by being respectful, by following their “gut feelings,” and by using kind words. They discussed things that make them “stop and think” while online. They also discussed how to balance their time between devices/media and device-free time to connect with family and friends.
Lessons in kindergarten and first grade focused on putting away technology when we don’t want to, and how we can be safe, responsible and respectful online. Kindergarteners practiced the phrase “pause, breathe, finish up” to help them transition from technology to another activity. The second and third grade spotlight was on media balance - using media in a way that feels healthy and in balance with other life activities. In fourth grade, students learned how to be upstanders and recognize cyberbullying online.
It is important to find a healthy media balance. Ask your child about ideas they have to make dinner time or weekends device-free. We could all use less screen time and more live people time.
