Head of School Letter: 2024 HBCU College Fair

Head of School Letter

Since 2017, Shorecrest Preparatory School has hosted a college fair specifically for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) for high school students in Hillsborough and Pinellas counties.

Shorecrest co-sponsors this event with the local Suncoast Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated, a membership organization of moms dedicated to nurturing future African-American leaders by strengthening children through leadership development, volunteer service, philanthropic giving, and civic duty.

In recent years, more than 300 guests have attended this event and had the opportunity to talk with representatives from 20+ HBCUs, sororities and fraternities. After hosting the last few HBCU college fairs virtually, this year's event will return to its original in-person format. The fair will be held tomorrow, Saturday, April 6, from 1-3:30pm in the Crisp Gym and is open to all Shorecrest families. [More]

Part of the purpose of co-hosting the HBCU fair is to welcome a broad segment of the St. Petersburg community to the Shorecrest campus. We want to provide opportunities like the HBCU fair for students and families from diverse backgrounds to come to our campus, get to know our school and facilities, while also exploring the myriad of options that HBCUs offer students for a post-secondary school experience.

In addition to the college fair event, Shorecrest will also host a College Admissions Workshop co-sponsored by the Southern Association for College Admission Counseling (SACAC) which will feature college admissions leaders speaking on key topics. Tim Fields, co-author of the best-selling book "The Black Family's Guide to College Admissions: A Conversation about Education, Parenting, and Race" will be joined by Eckerd College Dean of Admission Jacob Browne, who will speak about breaking down the college application and understanding the financial aid process.

We expect to welcome hundreds of college hopefuls onto campus tomorrow as they explore the next step of their educational journey. Bringing college admissions officers and university representatives to the Shorecrest campus enables students from Hillsborough and Pinellas counties to meet HBCU recruiters from all around the country face-to-face and learn more about these exciting collegiate opportunities. We embrace the chance to co-host both the College Fair and Admission Workshop as we look forward to a productive and informative afternoon.

All the best,

Nancy
