Mural on Enslavement, Resistance and Freedom

Upper School News Diversity & Inclusion

Shorecrest Upper School students in Kayla Brazee's AP African American Studies class recently started a unit which focuses on Enslavement, Resistance and Freedom.

To teach the community about the origins of African enslavement and the creation of the African diaspora, students were asked to collaborate with their group members to research topics related to the Transatlantic Slave trade and then create a mural panel based on their findings.

All of the panels were placed together to bring their collective topics into a single focus. They all put a great amount of thought and effort into the mural, which ended up being 16 feet long. It is currently hanging in the lobby of Charger Commons.

This is the first year that AP African American Studies has been offered as a 10th-12th grade elective in the Upper School.
