First Graders Move their Muscles and Bones

Lower School News

In the last edition of Shorecrest News, first graders used their 5 sense to learn about apples, and to introduce their human body unit.

This week kicked off the first grade inquiry of the human body, in which students learn about who they are inside and out. This exciting exploration will last from October into January, culminating in a project share at the end of that month. They will explore the incredible ways our minds, bodies, and community all work together to help us grow. They will learn about bones and muscles, amazing brains, and hardworking hearts.

Students have already learned from "All About Me" puzzles, drawing self portraits, community-building activities and growth mindset lessons. They had a stretchy yoga class and learned calming breathing techniques with Ms. Corinne in the Lower School Outdoor Classroom. They visited Mrs. Peck in the Upper School's Peck Center for Medical Sciences to meet Seymour Bones, her real human skeleton. And it's not even Halloween yet... Next week she will visit the first grade classrooms to dissect brains!

First graders will visit classes of all levels to observe how everyone uses their minds and bodies; and visit SAGE dining, the school nurse, the Athletic Center and beyond to see firsthand how our school community helps us learn about ourselves. They will discover the importance of maintaining good health through a balanced diet, sufficient rest, hydration and regular exercise. They will also hear from many people in our community who help us stay healthy, such as doctors, nurses, and other health care providers.
