YOU can Help Haiti

This year in fifth grade students have been learning about Haiti by reading the novel “Serafina’s Promise” by Ann E. Burg and learning in Social Studies about Haiti’s culture and geography. Students have learned that Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere; on top of that, they have been slammed by natural disaster after disaster such as hurricanes, torrential rains, and earthquakes. The fifth grade students decided to help needy children in Haiti. These children have very little; some have even become orphans because of these terrible natural disasters. If we help to improve the lives of these children, then maybe they will become the future leaders in Haiti who can help solve problems created in future disasters.

Fifth graders are partnering with the organization Youth Partners with Haiti (as they have for a few years) for this service learning project. This organization offers support to a school and orphanage in a small, Haitian village. Fifth graders are reaching out to the Shorecrest community to help by donating gently used or new items. One of the things needed most at the school is education items. Remember, these supplies are for kids of all ages, so age-geared items are ok as well as generic ones. You can donate artistic items like colored pencils, glue, paint, crayons, etc. Everyday education items such as pencils, erasers, paper, chalk, and folders are needed as well. Please no textbooks or regular books because they will be too heavy to ship to Haiti, and they speak French and/or Haitian Creole.

Do you have toys, games, puzzles or coloring books, or some sports supplies that are gently used or brand new? If you donate to fifth grade then we will get the items to people in Haiti. You could make a little kid‘s day! We are collecting for kids of all ages so if you donate please donate toys and things that are appropriate for kids of all ages. Look in your closet or toy box or garage for things to donate that you maybe don’t use or need anymore. Please note that we are not collecting electronic devices or things with plugs or that require batteries.
Please drop slightly used or new items in the bin outside the Middle School office. You can also drop off items in the bins in the Sher Razook 5th/6th grade hallway or the Middle School Arts & Sciences 7th/8th grade hallway. One bin will also be in the Lower School office. Fifth graders will be collecting through February 22. Please be a Haiti hero and donate today because YOU can make a difference!
