Did you see our zoo? Sixth graders researched and sculpted ancient bestiary/gods/goddesses from Aztec/Mayan, Egyptian, and Greek legends and literature and presented their projects in a 'zoo' around the Media Center. The cross-curricular project is support by the entire the sixth grade team and blends art, English, science, foreign language and library media.
The sixth-grade mythological zoo is an interdisciplinary project which begins in English, social studies, and Spanish classes. Students read myths and gained initial background info on beasts, gods, and goddesses of Greek, Egyptian, and Aztec/Mayan origin. Students then chose a beast from one of these cultures and conducted research.
From their research, students then built their beast in art class. Artist Gray Wise visited for the fifth year, and demonstrated how to use plastic shopping bags and found items to create lightweight, artistic sculptures. Using lots of plastic bags and other recycled items, student beasts took form! Then students added paint, details and embellishments.

Students applied what they learned in science class and added simple circuitry to their projects. With a choice of adding lights or motors, they made their beasts come alive! Eyes lit up, tails moved, and dragons breathed tissue paper fire! The zoo was a truly interactive experience.
English research papers, along with beast summaries in Spanish or French were added to the exhibit.
The sixth graders became zookeepers for one day, and gave tours to younger students of the Shorecrest community and to invited parents. Students shared what they learned and were able to show off their magnificent creations!
