Seventh Graders Advance to National History Day Competition

Middle School News

On May 4-6, Shorecrest Middle Schoolers Cali F '30, Shalyn M '30 and Max R '30, their families, and their history teacher Mr. Hodgson traveled to Tallahassee for the Florida History Day competition. Sponsored by the Museum of Florida History, Florida History Day (FHD) is an annual, statewide activity that enhances the teaching and learning of history in middle and high schools.

Shalyn M '30 competed in the Individual Performance category with a project entitled "Revered Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s Fight for ALL Americans' Equal Rights."

Cali F '30 and Max R '30 won first place in the Junior Group Performance category with their project entitled "Elizabeth Blackwell: The Rights and Responsibilities of a Female Pioneer in Medicine." They will be representing Shorecrest and the State of Florida in June at the National History Day Competition at the University of Maryland next month.

Students across the state advance through school, county, and state competitions to advance to National History Day. NHD promotes history in the classroom by offering students the resources and support to do original research about people, ideas, and events of the past. The curriculum supports the project-based learning approach.
