Shorecrest Performing Arts Presents: Oklahoma!
Join us for a captivating journey into the heart of the Oklahoma Territory at the turn of the 20th century as Shorecrest Performing Arts proudly presents the timeless musical, Oklahoma! Composed by Richard Rodgers with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, this production brings to life a story of romantic rivalry and community spirit.
The narrative follows cowhand Curly McLain as he courts Laurey Williams, a farm girl also pursued by the menacing farmhand Jud Fry. Through iconic songs such as "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'" and "The Surrey with the Fringe on Top," the musical depicts the vibrant yet tense community life as farmers and cowmen strive for statehood.
Beyond its romantic and pastoral themes, Oklahoma! delves into social dynamics and the emerging identity of its characters. The original production was the first Rodgers & Hammerstein musical, which introduced an integrated form that became known as “the musical play.” It was a groundbreaking success, running for an unprecedented 2,212 performances and earning a special Pulitzer Prize in 1944. Its enduring legacy includes a 1955 film adaptation, designation as the state song in 1953, and numerous re-imagined revivals, including a 2002 Broadway revival featuring Shorecrest Alumnus Patrick Wilson '91.
We invite you to experience this beloved classic in Shorecrest's Janet Root Theatre from April 16-18 at 7pm.
Online ticket sales will begin April 6.
