Career Day - Building a Network
On Monday, April 13, Upper School students attended a robust Career Day spearheaded by peer students in the STEAM Club. Chargers from grades 9-12 had the chance to hear from different speakers - including alumni, parents and friends of the school - who discussed their industries and how to break into their given field of work.
The morning kicked off with a Keynote from Shorecrest alumnus John Grady '86, Chief Executive Officer of Ayla Networks. Ayla is the leading, US-based Smart Home IoT platform provider, enabling unique connected home experiences for appliances, thermostats and wearables. Other alumni who presented included Robert King ‘90, Laura Pemble ‘17, Beth Reynolds ‘86 and Dr. Sandy Worman.
Upper School students had the chance to attend three different sessions throughout the moring, learning about everything from journalism to marine ecosystems, from medicine to management. They heard from a special agent of the FBI and past Deputy Mayor Kanika Tomalin. In addition to discussing industry qualifications and opportunities, many speakers also spoke about the importance of networking, following your passion, and finding work-life balance.
What began as an Alumni Association initiative has now become a cornerstone, student-led event for the third year at Shorecrest. A huge "thank you" to our STEAM Club organizers and the alumni, parents and community members who inspired the next generation of leaders.
