AP Human Geography students from Shorecrest's Upper School have been studying cultural ecology by examining environmental sustainability issues in Tampa Bay. As part of the inquiry, St. Petersburg City Council Member Darden Rice visited to address the question of government involvement in sustainability initiatives. Students learned about the relationship between local government and global environmental concerns, and were inspired to become active participants in our democratic system.
The class also enjoyed field experiences at Tampa area springs to learn about both successful and failed restoration efforts. They met a landscape architect and environmental engineer and began to understand the connection between environmental policy and socio-economic conditions in Tampa Bay.
