The undefeated Varsity Football Chargers traveled to Bradenton on Friday, September 14, to face St. Stephens Episcopal School, and tasted their first defeat. It was a 42-7 loss to the defending SSAC Champions.
The Chargers came into the game with multiple nagging injuries and just couldn't match the defending champions depth or speed as the Eagles from St. Stephens racked up 34-0 halftime lead.
It was obvious from the kickoff that our lack of depth would be revealed against such a talented team. If all of the Chargers had been there able to play, we may have given St. Stephens all they wanted, but within the 1st quarter we had 3 of our starters on the bench nursing various injuries, and we could feel early on this was not the night for an upset. They are a very talented team who will likely run the table in our division.
This loss doesn't keep us from getting to the playoffs, and certainly doesn't define us going forward. We used the 2nd half to get our young guys some good game-time experience, and from that standpoint we were very pleased with how they responded. Players like Henry Pickard, Anthony Vivio and Jake Wilsey really took advantage of the opportunity and made some great plays. It's a long season, so these guys will get another opportunity to shine and we are confident they will!
