The Experiential School curriculum supports the natural process through which children make sense of and understand themselves, others, and their environments. It fosters relationship and community building, expression, and development of the whole child through a balance of self-initiated and teacher-initiated activities. Involving children in experiences that relate to their lives makes learning meaningful and fun.
Over the past few weeks, Ms. Daley’s Alpha class (the Otters) has been investigating schools. They have observed schools in other countries and even built their dream schools out of blocks and other materials. To deepen their understanding of their own larger school community, the Otters embarked on a tour of the Lower School at Shorecrest.
Before taking the tour, Ms. Daley’s students discussed what might be the same or different between the Experiential School and Lower School, and what everyone anticipated seeing on their tour. The list was long but the young Chargers were able to check almost all of their boxes, including meeting Dr. Lisa Bianco, Head of Lower School, meeting teachers, seeing siblings, and looking at project work in all grade levels. They were even able to greet a live bunny in Mrs. Oman's second grade classroom!
Ms. Daley’s class loved seeing such a special place! Most importantly, it deepened their in-depth study of schools right in their own community. Shorecrest campus experiences help students feel more connected to the larger school community and help ease future transitions.
“We are so grateful to Dr. Bianco and the Lower School teachers for taking the time to help our littlest Chargers explore!” shared Mrs. Daley.
