SCA Volunteer Appreciation Awards Presented

The Shorecrest Community Association (SCA) presented Volunteer Appreciation Awards at the SCA Thank You event on Wednesday, April 22. Inspired by and in honor of the School's annual Janet Root Volunteer of the Year Award, SCA also recognized volunteers through a number of new Volunteer Appreciation Awards.

"The Janet Root Volunteer of the Year Award is the Best Picture Oscar of the annual volunteer awards," said SCA Co-presidents Sasha Muzzarelli and Lindsey Carroll. "In honor of the legacy of Janet Root and the winners of her namesake award, SCA has added some new recognition opportunities, highlighting our volunteers at different places in their Shorecrest journey." 

Shorecrest community members were encouraged to nominate volunteers from across all school divisions who they believed deserve to be recognized. 

Congratulations to the following SCA Volunteer Appreciation Award Recipients:

Janet Root Volunteer of the Year Award - Lauren Carlan 
Lauren Carlan, a Shorecrest Alumni parent and current parent, has been volunteering with the Shorecrest community for a number of years. Some of her roles have included: SCA Volunteer Coordinator, SCA Uniform Sale committee chair, Oldie Goldie book sale committee chair, grade level representative in LS and MS, parent ambassador for Admissions, and volunteering with other committees such as teacher appreciation and greenery.  She has made special efforts after hurricanes to get uniforms to Shorecrest families in need, and non-uniform clothing from Shorecrest students to the nonprofit Clothes for Kids. 

The Janet Root Volunteer of the Year Award was created in 1984 by the then Shorecrest Parent Association (now SCA) to commemorate the innumerable volunteer contributions of Janet G. Root H’16, lifetime Trustee, Chair of the Arts and Humanities Department, and namesake of the Janet Root Theatre, who began her Shorecrest journey as a parent volunteer. Longevity, committee leadership and scope of service are among the criteria for consideration. 

Experiential School Bright Beginnings Award - Ciarra Johnson & Jessica Garvin
For bringing extra warmth and support to our youngest learners and their families, as well as supporting Experiential School teachers and events

Lower School Joy-Maker Award - Kristen Rambicure 
For adding heart and energy to Lower School through celebrations, class support and special moments, as well as supporting Lower School teachers and staff

Middle School Momentum Award - Dana Strus
For showing up consistently during the busy years - boosting student life with positivity, inclusion and special celebrations for both students and teachers 

Upper School Impact Award - Allison Skorewicz
For supporting students and teachers behind the scenes, at both events and everyday enhancements to campus life. 

Senior Class Parent Award - Sara Cowan
For going above and beyond to support the Class of 2026 and make the year truly memorable, from monthly lunches to upholding traditions - helping to mark the milestones in a meaningful way

Athletics: Sidelines Spark Award - Tina Stier
For elevating Chargers Athletics through organization, teamwork and spirited support

Arts: Standing Ovation Spark Award - Tonya Farkas
For championing the arts and helping students shine through performance, exhibits and programs. Did you see the "Oklahoma covered" wagon and piglets?? 

Community Service: Spark of Service Award - Catie Prawer
For always going the extra mile to help families and the Shorecrest community 

Heart & Hustle Chair Award - Nicky Junor 
For jumping in with both feet, leading with enthusiasm & heart and making things happen - sparking ideas, inspiring others and turning a vision into something special 

Charger Dad MVP Award - Frank Casano
For creating opportunities for connection, fun, and lasting relationships among Shorecrest dads - sharing energy, taking initiative, and igniting a spark within our Charger community
