Shorecrest’s Mission is augmented by the generosity of our parents, grandparents, alumni, and friends who support the school philanthropically or by effecting change locally, globally or right here at Shorecrest. We call these community members Contributing Chargers.
This week we recognize the Mathews family as Contributing Chargers. Since joining the community in 2012, they have supported Shorecrest through their time, talent and financial support. Throughout the time that Kobi ‘16, Ella ‘28 and Jack ‘31 have been at Shorecrest, Leslie Mathews has shared her talents as a professional photographer and at many events, and also dedicated her time with SCA in support of Teacher Appreciation and Shorecrest Cares.
Leslie reflected on her role as a Contributing Charger and said:
When we moved to Florida from St. Louis eleven years ago, Shorecrest quickly became our community. Since we were starting our careers and had a young child at home, I only socialized at our oldest son’s, Kobi's, school events for the first few years. That quickly changed when our third child came along, and I gave up practicing law to be at home and study photography.
As I became comfortable with this new role, Shorecrest embraced me, my love of photography and my desire to be part of my children's school community in a really special way. That is where my volunteer time at school began. Sharing my talents on campus gave me an opportunity to connect with students, staff and faculty, as well as be present while my kids were making incredible memories at school. Capturing those moments, especially during Kobi's senior year, was a gift.
A few years ago when asked to make donations for improvements to the school, we had two requests. We wanted to be sure our children would benefit from this new space, and more importantly we wanted to know that diversity and inclusion was at the forefront of Shorecrest's short- and long-term plans. We were assured that a plan and a committee were working on it. We are so happy that we gave our support and put our trust in the leadership at Shorecrest. Through the work of Roderick Fudd, Khana Rebman '05 and others, I see that the school is following through on its promises. Also, our kids are definitely loving Charger Commons and the new playground!
My volunteer time at school looks a bit different now. The pandemic and my children's ages (3rd and 6th grade) have meant less time on campus until recently. This year I supported the staff and teachers differently, as I know that these past two years have been so difficult.
In my first year working with Shorecrest Cares and serving as co-Chair on the Teacher Appreciation Committee, I am not sure who benefited the most. Supporting the people who make this school and community what it is has been incredibly fulfilling. I hope to continue this role of giving back for as long as I am allowed.
I was able to get back on campus with my camera a bit this year too. I would say to anyone in the community who has gifts and talents to offer – bring them to school. You will get back so much more than you could ever imagine!"
The impact of Contributing Chargers like the Mathews family, along with the members of our community, can be felt every day.
