On Valentine's Day, the Chief of cardiovascular surgery at Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital, Dr. Jeff Jacobs, visited Mrs. Peck's Anatomy and Physiology class to lead a dissection of cow hearts. Dr. Jacobs, who is also a Charger parent, guided members of the class as they partnered up and cut open the hearts to locate the 4 chambers of the heart and find the valves separating each atrium from the corresponding ventricle. Students also saw the chords and the muscles that make the valves function. It was awesome for students to be able to see the heart in 3 dimensions as a hands-on experience and learn more about how the heart functions -- on Valentine's Day!
Dr. Jacob's explained how and why he became a heart surgeon. He discussed how he repairs baby's hearts which are the size of a golf ball. Dr. Jacobs said he is still amazed when he transplants a heart into a child and sees it beat for the first time.
Thank you Dr. Jacobs for visiting!
