10 Shorecrest Seniors Recognized by National Merit Scholarship Program

Upper School News

Shorecrest seniors Charity Chen, Mitchell Greene, Hunter Holland, Kyle Mullins, and Sylvia Smith have been named National Merit Semifinalists by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. The five Shorecrest seniors earned their semifinalist status with their exceptional scores on the 2016 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), ranking their scores in the top 1% of High School Seniors in the United States. They are five of only 11 students in the City of St. Petersburg to earn the honor.

About 16,000 students, or approximately one-third of the 50,000 high scorers, are notified that they have qualified as Semifinalists. To ensure that academically talented young people from all parts of the United States are included in this talent pool, Semifinalists are designated on a state-representational basis.

To be considered for a National Merit® Scholarship, Semifinalists must advance to Finalist standing in the competition by meeting high academic standards and all other requirements explained in the information provided to each Semifinalist. Finalists will be notified in February.

In addition, five seniors were named Commended Students in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program, scoring in the top 3% of approximately 1.6 million juniors: Samuel Benjamin, Adrianna Linn, Will Martin, Shannon O'Shea, and Casey Reich.
