On Thursday, March 2, the Shorecrest Upper School welcomed Holocaust survivor Jerry Rawicki for a special assembly. Mr. Rawicki, who escaped the Warsaw ghetto in 1943, was only 14 years old when the war began.
“We knew the winds of war were blowing, but never in our wildest imaginations did we know the horrors that were coming,” Rawicki began.
Sophomores Aidan S., Trevor B., Taylor E., Sophie E., and Sarah M. hosted a panel interview of Mr. Rawicki for the assembly. The five-student team interviewed Mr. Rawicki previously as part of their National History Day Project “Standing up for Survival - The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.” The project won the Lazar Family Holocaust prize at the 2017 competition, which was themed “Taking a Stand in History.”
“To have a survivor of the most horrific genocide in human history speak to our students offers a unique opportunity for them to gain a better understanding of what happened and why,” said Shorecrest Head of Upper School Tom Dillow. “Our students’ children will not have the same opportunity.”
