GSI Students at Climate Change Lecture

Upper School News

On September 26, Global Scholar Initiative students Kyle Mullins and Max Summer, along with GSI advisor Kurt Wahlgren, attended the Tampa Bay Council on Foreign Relations (TBCFR) dinner. Two professors delivered a lecture titled “Thin Ice: The Effect of Climate Change on Foreign Policy and National Security.”

The remarks were given by Dr. John A. Knox, the Sandy Beaver Professor of Geography and Undergraduate Coordinator of the Atmospheric Sciences program at the University of Georgia, and Dr. Pam Knox, who serves as an Agricultural Climatologist for the Crop and Soil Sciences Department in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, also at the University of Georgia.

Kyle and Max noted the following:

“The TBCFR broke new ground, I think, with the introduction of a primarily scientific topic. Climate change is an issue that affects every aspect of international relations, from international law to refugees to war. That’s what made the talk so interesting – there wasn’t a single area of study that wasn’t connected to the issue.” – Kyle

“Climate change is a far more pressing matter today than I ever realized. I now understand that we as a global community need to come together to address this problem.” –Max

We would like to thank both professors for taking the time to chat after the program ended.
