GSI at TBCFR Dinner with Ambassador Frank G. Wisner

Upper School News

Upper School students who participate in Shorecrest’s Global Scholars Initiative attended a talk by Ambassador Frank G. Wisner on Tuesday, March 6. The Tampa Bay Council on Foreign Relations remarks were titled, “The United States and Iran: Challenges Ahead.”

Ambassador Frank Wisner, former U.S. Ambassador to Zambia, Egypt, the Philippines, and India, argued several key points over the course of the evening:

  • In The Persian Gulf War, President Bush showed restraint and respect for national sovereignty by not entering Iraq.
  • The U.S. should not leave the present Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA), as it could impact future negotiations with North Korea and other adversaries.
  • In his view, America’s foreign policy has not been articulate since 1989.
  • Egypt will not take foreign policy risks in the near future. Instead, they will fortify their border with Libya and stay on good terms with Israel.

Ashley Ballestra '18 (pictured), had the following to say about Ambassador Wisner’s presentation: “This was my favorite TBCFR dinner that I’ve attended. I thought Mr. Winser was extremely knowledgeable, and his remark about how tearing up the JCPOA agreement will potentially affect future relations between the U.S. and other countries, in that it would be harder for the U.S. to be seen as trustworthy in forming future agreements, especially resonated with me.”

Will Hess '19 (pictured), added: “When I heard Mr. Wisner speak, I could tell that through his experience he knows that even in this chaotic world with many changing variables there is always a solution to even the most complex issues.”
