Kate Danielson ’24 Sets Sail for Success

Athletics Upper School News

Shorecrest student-athlete and Chargers Sailing Team Captain Kate Danielson ‘24 recently showcased her incredible talent at the U.S. Olympic Team Sailing Trials. Her journey to the trials began back in January 2023 when she secured her spot among the nation's top sailors.

Picture this: the Miami Yacht Club, the Atlantic Ocean as the backdrop, seven exhilarating days of racing, 14 intense races – and Kate right in the midst of the action! Throughout the trials, Kate experienced nice, windy weather and sailed alongside seasoned campaigners, college sailors, and fellow youth sailors. Kate impressively came in 9th place out of 26 competitors. She reflects, "While I may not have clinched the top spot just yet, racing against the best in the country was an incredible learning experience. It's all about growth and seeing where I stand."

Event Chair and Barcelona 1992 Bronze Medalist, Pamela Healy, said, “This high-pressure format is intended to truly test the athletes and make sure the strongest are nominated.”

Among the participants was Erika Reineke, who emerged victorious and will proudly represent the U.S. in the ILCA 6 class (an all female fleet) at the Olympics.

Kate shares, "Erika coached the Fort Lauderdale sailing team before she began campaigning and so I've seen her around at regattas for a long time. She's definitely a role model for me. This has been a 15 year journey for her and she's so humble; a win for her feels like a win for all of us."

Looking ahead, Kate's next big regatta awaits in late March, the qualifier for the ISAF Youth Worlds. The US will only send 2 sailors, and she's ready to compete for a coveted spot.

Kate's future is bright. She plans to immerse herself in college sailing next year, with aspirations of potentially campaigning for the Olympics in 2028 or 2032.
