Boys Varsity Tennis Falls in State Quarterfinal to 4x Champs

Athletics Upper School News

The Shorecrest Chargers Varsity Boys Tennis season ended on May 1, 2024, with a hard fought State Quarterfinal loss to an overpowering Saint Andrews, Scotsman 5-0.

For the second year in a row the Chargers emerged as District and Regional Champions with a bid to the State Quarterfinal round.

As the team was traveling to the State Quarterfinal match site in Orlando, Coach Davis surprised the team with a trip to the USTA National Campus, home of American tennis. He had reserved practice courts for the team to practice in preparation for their match. The players were ecstatic about the opportunity to practice at the impressive USTA facility.

Of both the girls and boys varsity and junior varsity teams, Coach Davis shared, "This kind of success does not happen by accident. It is the direct result of the system we have put in place over the past eight years to elevate the Shorecrest tennis program."

At the State meet the Chargers fought hard for every point and represented Shorecrest sportsmanship, commitment to excellence and spirit. Coach noted, "While the scores do not indicate the match play, many of the players at every line from number 1 to number 5 had deuce points and went back and forth with advantage in and advantage out."

At the conclusion of the match, the Saint Andrews Coach, Reid Rafter, shook every Charger's hand and complimented them on their competitiveness.

"Those comments coming from Coach Rafter were high praise indeed," Coach Davis remarked.

"Now we go back to training year round, playing tournaments and getting ready for the next season in order to sustain the high level of performance that Florida tennis demands."
