On Sunday, May 19, Ryan Flugel '27 held his Eagle Scout Court of Honor, a ceremony during which he was recognized for earning Eagle Scout rank, the highest rank of the Boy Scouts of America's Scouts BSA program. A Scout since 2016, Ryan earned Eagle Scout rank by meeting a set of rigorous requirements, demonstrating leadership, and completing a significant service project. Ryan's service project created a safe and stable walking path in the Native Classroom, a channel-side outdoor classroom on the Shorecrest campus.
The project was an extension of one completed by another Shorecrest Eagle Scout, Walker Willis '19. In 2017, Walker converted an area of campus that was dense with invasive Australian pines into an outdoor educational area now known as the Native Classroom.
"The Native Classroom is a special place on the Shorecrest campus that provides our community with an outdoor classroom that is used for many things such as data collection, nature sketching, a space to reflect, and even filmmaking," shared Kathryn Jeakle, Middle School Science Teacher. "While this space is a great place to take students, there was a pretty treacherous section that made it challenging to walk without slipping. Yes, on many occasions someone would end up with soggy shoes and dirty knees after slipping into the canal!"
The walking path Ryan created has made the Native Classroom safe to walk without fear of slipping into the canal. In just the past month, 202 students from second grade, seventh grade and eighth grade have traversed the path safely many times to learn together outdoors.
"Ryan's path has truly made the Native Classroom a safer and more accessible place for all who visit," shared Ms. Jeakle, who served as Ryan's mentor for the project.
"Thank you to all of the adult leaders that have given their time to support the Scout Program and have helped and encouraged me through my years in Scouts," said Ryan.
