Surrounded by classmates, colorful posters, and the steady buzz of hallway chatter during Tuesday’s Upper School Club Fair, Frances Humphreys ’27 stood proudly at her table to introduce peers to one of the newest student organizations on campus - the Blood Cancer United Club. The group, formerly known as the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, focuses on raising awareness and critical funds to support patients and research surrounding all blood cancers.

For Frances the mission is deeply personal. “In my family, my grandfather has blood cancer,” she shared. That’s a large part of why she was drawn to get involved.

Through the club students will participate in fundraising campaigns, including outreach to local businesses, with donations supporting both cutting-edge research and the people directly affected by these diseases. Frances sees this not only as a way to advocate for a cause close to her heart but also as a step toward her future aspirations.

“I was really interested because I want to do pre-med in college. It is so cool that we can be raising funds for possible jobs that I want to do in the future,” she explained. The fact that the money goes directly to people who have blood cancer means “we have an opportunity to make a really cool impact.”

Frances' leadership has already gained recognition beyond the Shorecrest campus. She is a candidate for the Student Visionary of the Year by Blood Cancer United, honoring her initiative and dedication to the cause.

For Frances the club is more than a service opportunity - it’s a bridge between her present passions and future goals; one that allows her to rally her peers while making a difference in the broader community.
