Six Chargers Student-Athletes Commit To Play Sports In College
Shorecrest Chargers Athletics recently celebrated five student-athletes from the Class of 2026 who committed to continue their academic and athletic careers at the collegiate level.
During an Athletics Commitment Ceremony on April 30, our community gathered to celebrate the hard work, leadership and dedication of four of these seniors. The ceremony recognized Scout Brummett ‘26, who will attend Eckerd College to play Division II Soccer; Arden Katcha ‘26, who committed to Division I Sailing at Tulane University; Clark Mason ‘26, who will continue his golf career at Division I Duke University; and Asher Walton ‘26, who committed to Division III Cross Country and Track & Field at Franklin & Marshall College. The event reflected not only the athletes’ achievements, but also each student-athletes’ incredible character.
Arden Katcha’s sailing journey began long before high school. Arden had been sailing with her family since she was a baby. Even at a young age, she demonstrated leadership and care for the environment, speaking out about water quality conditions in Tampa Bay after a regatta was canceled due to unsafe conditions. Years later Arden continued charting her own course athletically, earning a spot on the Shorecrest sailing team as an eighth grader. Coach Todd Fedyszyn reflected on her growth and determination throughout her time with the program in his speech.
Varsity Golf Coach Daniel Asad spoke proudly about Clark Mason’s accomplishments and impact on Shorecrest Golf, calling him “a true golf superstar.” During the ceremony, Coach Asad invited the audience to stand up and “tee off” Clark into the next chapter, creating one of the most memorable and lighthearted moments of the event. Clark’s resume includes multiple appearances at the State Championship while representing Shorecrest, as well as a major victory at the 2025 FJT PGA National Open in Palm Beach Gardens, where he finished with a 3-under 69 to secure the championship title against some of Florida’s top junior golfers.
Cross Country Coach Jeff Raab and Track & Field Coach Richard Cameron both spoke about Asher Walton’s leadership, consistency, and dedication. Raab described Asher as “the definition of dependable,” adding that he has set “an incredible pace” during his time at Shorecrest. A standout student-leader both on and off the course, Asher was also named Mr. Spirit during Homecoming Week and has helped lead the Chargers to strong performances in both cross country and track & field.
The Commitment Ceremony served as a celebration of years of dedication and the exciting opportunities ahead for these student-athletes as they prepare for their next chapters beyond Shorecrest.
The following week the Athletics Department recognized Maddox Matyas '26 who built an impressive swimming career at Shorecrest. Maddox has helped lead the Chargers to multiple District and State Championship appearances while also continuously raising the standard for the Swimming & Diving program. He has set and broken multiple school records, including the Boys 200 Free and Boys 400 Free Relay alongside teammates, reflecting both his individual talent and team contributions. Maddox has also been recognized as a USA Swimming Scholastic All-American, an honor awarded to just 1,790 student-athletes nationwide who demonstrate exceptional achievement both in the classroom and in sport.
Earlier this year Shorecrest also celebrated alumna Sophia Dyer ‘26 as she began her collegiate golf career at the University of Florida, continuing a growing tradition of Chargers competing at the next level.
